Syrian Hamster Diet
The main part of a hamster's diet should be pellets or muesli. Pellets are good because the hamster cannot pick out the bits which are tasty and leave out the healthy pieces - it is all squashed into one. However, a good muesli can be a lot more exciting for them and promotes foraging. When feeding them muesli, you must be careful to make sure they eat ALL of it by not re-filling the bowl until they have eaten almost everything (do this by checking how much is left in their nest).
There are many great muesli mixes which you can create. Here is mine, which makes 1kg of food:
- Supreme Original Harry Hamster Food (400g)
- Pets At Home Hamster Nuggets (300g)
- Supreme Science Selective Hamster (300g)
You should also supplement their diet with other foods and treats. These can be used to help your hamster be more active, by sprinkling them throughout the cage and hiding them in toys. This is a great boredom breaker as well as making their diet more interesting and healthy!

Protein
Not many people know that hamsters need protein in their diet and some people even believe it can lead to cannibalism! However, it is essential for their diet and they love the taste, too. Things that are great for protein are:
-Dog biscuits/treats
- Dried mealworms
- Dried shrimp
- Boiled, unseasoned chicken
- Plain hard boiled egg
I have found that dwarf hamsters like mealworms more than Syrian hamsters do, so I give my Syrian dog biscuits and treats. She really enjoys Pedigree Markies and Milky Bones which are both really good for wearing down her teeth. Another favourite are the Pedigree Cheesy Bites. I will usually feed her one dog biscuit and 2-3 small dog treats per week. Other good dog treats include: Bonios, Pedigree Multi-grain Bites, Bakers Allsorts and Gravy Bones.
